Paddle with a purpose and do your bit for the environment. Join us for a beach & island clean up on Strangford Lough. The ‘Leave No Trace’ message will be discussed along the paddle as will the effects of local damage to wildlife and habitats along our rivers and coastlines by some of NI’s wildlife experts and environmentalists. Strangford Lough is an area of outstanding beauty, a marine nature reserve and a site of specific scientific interest. Furthermore, It plays host to over 2000 species of wildlife.
Raised awareness on the effects of litter and plastic has brought the subject into the media. However, efforts are in place the world over to combat pollution. Therefore, our aim is to protect the local environment and wildlife. Above all, ensure it is still there for future generations to enjoy.
This event is being run as part of NI Science Festival. We organise several paddle with a purpose dates throughout the calendar year for people to get involved. However, if you would like to organise a specific event for a group or company, please contact us directly.
Departing from the shore, you will be issued with a buoyancy aid, canoe, paddles, litter picker and rubbish bag. In addition, our instructors will deliver a short introductory paddling session to help you get on your way. Along the route instructors will guide you on your tour with interesting facts, local history and wildlife spotting. The destination will depend on areas of most pollution, wind and weather. On reaching our destination, you will be free to explore the islands respectfully, collecting rubbish en route. After that, we will finish up with toasted marshmallows & hot chocolate.
